This has been gnawing away at me for decades and I finally got round to doing it. The pun on gourd was too much to resist. One thing it's not is a novelty toy. It's got a lot going for it .

  • Any chance of a Banjo Gurdy?

  • @joelstewart Way too scratchy I'd have thought but feel free to make one yourself ;-)

  • Nice — And what about the price? Less time consuming than bending a load of ribs surely, but what about carving the neck?

  • @WaterpigMaster It took about the same time as a wren to build . The neck is a separate piece glued under the keybox - peghed geared tuners add a bit so £1150 sounds right. I have no plans to make more than one more ( I've still got the other half of the gourd!) I just needed to see if it could be done.

  • powerful drones! Very good job, thank you Neil

  • …J'ai bien vu la bete avec sa queue et sa grosse tete !

  • @lasaintebarbe: It's La GrandBete, a Gilles Chabenat tune.

  • Very cool and inventive Neil! What is that song your are playing in the video?

  • I'm with Mush01, in that experimentation with visual design seems to be in short supply among gurdy luthiers. You seem to have a knack for being able to build excellent playing instruments in a variety of designs efficiently, and that is something that has eluded a lot of builders. Plus you manage to indulge your creativity. Great stuff!

  • Please don't sell it before I get a chance to try it! Rory.

  • @neilbrook Okay, makes sense. It's a bit like those foldey-up guitars — I wouldn't buy one, but it's good that it exists (and I would probably have a good crack at building one, but I have my own Gurdy gimmick planned)
