The 1964 Olympic Rowing Trials were held on the Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham Bay Park, NYC from July 8 - 11. Don Spero of the New York Athletic Club won the trials and managed a 6th place finish in Tokyo after having sustained an injury in the semi-final. A three-time National Champion from 1963-1964, Spero also won the Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1965. He was inducted into the New York Athletic Club's Hall of Fame in 1986.
The Orchard Beach Lagoon was widened and dredged when the site was chosen to host the Olympic Trials. The site also played host to the Pan Am Trials in 1967 and the National Championships and World Championship Trials in 1974.
Today the Lagoon is home to the rowing teams of the New York Athletic Club, Iona College, Pelham Community Rowing Club, and serves as an alternate home race course for the Ivy League's Columbia University.
