Twice a year the International Reporting Project (IRP) awards up to 12 U.S. "gatekeeper" editors fellowships to travel as a group on an intensive fact-finding visit to a single important but somewhat under covered country in the news.

In May 2008 12 senior U.S. editors and producers traveled to Uganda for a 10-day International Reporting Project (IRP) Gatekeeper Editors trip. They were accompanied by Ben de la Cruz of Washingtonpost.com, who shot video during the trip.

The editors met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for a two and a half hour interview on a wide range of topics, including HIV/AIDS, population, agricultural development and economic growth. In the following excerpt Museveni answers a question about population growth.

  • So who is supposed to process the coffee or add value to ur exports??? u sing about the same crap all the time,of course there is a deliberate move to keep people in poverty so as to rule them forever, they dance to ur tune while they use leaves to wipe their asses because they can't afford toilet paper!!!!

  • I think he is right if productivity is increased by the existing task force in uganda can feed itself and others, so stop be lazy get up work hard and feed many> i like museveni and i am not ugandan but Ethiopian

  • It has taken him 20+ years to realise commodities like coffee can make more money when processed to final product. so, why not make a goverment coffee factory? Just remembered the corruption level. For the time he has been in power, we do wanna hear those ideas but make them work.

  • Its leaders like Museveni that makes me ashamed to be a Ugandan and an African. What the president is saying makes no sense, he claims that increased poplulationen will lead to development. How would an increase in population lead to the development when we are already seeing a sky high unemployment and poverty, i believe that ugandan should take advantage if there is a small population that museveni is claiming. Make sure that the people are employed before u talk about increased population..

  • you have had 20+ years to sort shit like that what are u talking about. not to mention all the aid during all these years and u still haven't built a school, hospital etc roads are devastating, kony reigns supreme. fuck u man. despot! brainwashing, changing constitutions, rigging elections, embezzling govt.funds & aid money, forcing me to starve, flee the country. underdevelopment!!!?? u have the nerve asshole who the fuck is the blame except u douche. idi amin got nothing on u

  • pajwee you are true!

  • google this and see...

    expose uganda genocide

  • Mr President!! underdevelopment should by no means be attributed to underpopulation. Take iceland for instance with a population of 298000 and a GNI of 36560$ compared to your uganda with a population of 29899000 and GNI of 1490$. Uganda and Africa is poor and will remain poor as long as stupid leaders like you who loves to misguide the ignorant population are still in power.
