Beaky is an English wooden jig puppet - or a limberjack, as these things are called in the US. He was made by puppet maker Chris Harvey in Woodbridge in Suffolk. Jig puppets are a very old form of street entertainment. By holding the puppet just above a flexible wooden board (which is held in place between the performer's bum and his chair), and tapping the board in time to the music, the puppet can be made to dance. Beaky's dancing has a bonus - his wings can also move in time to the music! He has been painted to look like a Buff Sussex cockerel - a breed local to where I live.

The music is based on some Garageband loops - the main sound being that of a Nordic keyed fiddle with some guitar, shaker and tabla backing it up.

Just a bit of fun - hope you like it! And here's a link to Chris Harvey's website:

  • @leckieg D'you know- I'd never thought of that... :-)

  • Ha ha! Loved this version of my old Nordic fiddle samples (Apple has now renamed the loops with the more correct name Nordic Keyed Fiddle 1 and 2, them being played on a 17th century nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle in Swedish) Was done 20 years ago for a Swedish sample library which was later sold to Apple.

  • @liraman Hey - good to hear from the Nordic fiddle creator. Great piece of music - and perfect for Beaky! :-)
