Golden Lion Tamarins form small groups of up to fourteen individuals, led by a breeding pair. The coastal state of Rio de Janeiro is home to the quickly disappearing Atlantic Forest habitat on which golden lion tamarins depend. This species was first listed as endangered in 1982, rising to critically endangered in 1996. The total wild population is estimated to be 562 individuals but another 500 captively-bred animals have been reintroduced to forested areas in the historic range. There are about 500 individuals in captivity.

Gouden leeuwaapjes kun je haast niet met andere apen verwisselen: geen enkele andere apensoort heeft zo'n prachtige langharige feloranje vacht. Hun lange haren doen een beetje denken aan de manen van een leeuw.
Er zijn vier soorten leeuwaapjes. Naast het gouden leeuwaapje is er nog het goudkop leeuwaapje, het zwartkop leeuwaapje en het zwarte leeuwaapje. Hun gedrag en uiterlijk lijken veel op elkaar; alleen de kleur van hun vacht is steeds net wat anders verdeeld.
Alle Zuid-Amerikaanse dwergaapjes, waartoe de gouden leeuwaapjes ook behoren, hebben klauwnageltjes. Deze soorten worden daarom ook wel 'klauw-aapjes' genoemd.

Leeuwaapjes leven hoofdzakelijk van vruchten. Ze likken ook nectar en eten bloesems en boomsappen. Verder eten ze veel kleine diertjes die ze in de regenwoudbomen tegenkomen: insecten, kikkers en hagedissen bijvoorbeeld. Het aandeel dierlijk voedsel is niet erg groot, maar dierlijke eiwitten spelen wel een belangrijke rol bij het op peil houden van hun gezondheid.

I helped to re-wild these at the Oregon Zoo. We got them from the Hamburg Zoo, and they were on the zoo grounds, without any enclosures. We carefully observed their behavior to monitor their survival skills. After a year, the pair was taken down to the State of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Within a year the female found herself a wild mate, and they had a baby. So having animals in captivity, can help to rehabilitate a wild population.

Golden lion tamarins isn't endangered since early 2000's.

It became a pest in some protected areas.
