Redemption came from off the pace Saturday afternoon, on a day when speed ruled and youth was served.

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, after six failed tries that included the toughest beat in history with Real Quiet in 1998 and last years aborted Triple Crown attempt with Big Brown, capped a four-win day with his first Belmont Stakes victory aboard Drs. Kalarikkal and Vilasini Devi Jayaramans 11-1 longshot Summer Bird before a crowd of 52,861 at Belmont Park. Summer Bird paid $25.80 to win.

I left the house this morning with a will to win this race, because it means beauty, class and elegance, Desormeaux said after Summer Bird brought him through the middle of the lane for a 2 ¾-length victory over Dunkirk in the 141st running of the 1½-mile Test of the Champion the longest and oldest leg of racings Triple Crown for three-year-olds.

Mine That Bird, the 50-1 Kentucky Derby winner, Preakness runner-up and Belmont Stakes post-time favorite, was third, followed by Charitable Man, Luv Gov, Flying Private, Brave Victory, Mr. Hot Stuff, Chocolate Candy and Miners Escape.

  • Real talk that was a good damn race i can't take nothing away from {Minie that Bird beacause he came from a nice good distance. That's a race with good power and a damn good bloodline even thowe he didn't have just alittle bit more gas to win He showed everybody that he was a real race horse it was a close race.Mine that Bird also had a joceky riding him that's what's up. From Danger crew Kennels.

  • Summer Bird only won the Eclipse award for Champion three year old male because, except for Rachel Alexandra, 2009 was a down year for three year olds in my opinion. Look at Mine That Bird, who won the Derby well, and had a game run at the Preakness and Belmont, and then never won another race.

  • The connections are as inbred as him . This guy takes off to ride another horse and they still let him ride. Calvin must have thought they were running a 1 1/4 this guy is overrated as they come. The ride he gave Mine That Bird was awful and how does he get rewarded he gets to ride Mine That Bird again. The connections are probably drunk like he is. Calvin Borel rot in hell you toothless chump. Ha Ha Ha. Calvin Borel could be the father of another horse. Check out his face!!!

  • Calvin moved Mine that Bird up WAY to early, since when does he move the horse up BEFORE the backstretch, Summer Bird was the rocket then, he shot up on the outside in a similar style to his half brother. Calvin has become cocky, obsessed with winning rather then sticking with his trusted mount for the Derby, he wanted the Triple Crown although if he had ridden Mine tha Bird in the PReakness, the horse would have won! He would have beat Racheal if the race had been a little longer.
