This is the last video of the chick in the nest. After four broods (two never past the egg stage due to predation) and about 17 eggs laid, this is the sole survivor who left very early morning on the 16rh Day after the first hatching. Persistence by the female eventually paid off despite a year of destruction by a rat - that eventually was found dead on our lawn.
What a sad story, but at least they produced one offspring. Thanks for sharing this fascinating insight to their lives. I hope our Blackbirds have more luck. We had five rats here over the winter, I hate to kill anything but I tried and tried live traps but they wouldn't go in. Eventually I had to use poison as they would all be breeding soon and that would devastate our garden bird population as you know. So at the moment we are rat free and the camera is recording the nest 24 hours a day.
