The first black-and-white movie version of this Opera, "The Purple Hairpin" starring the original duo, Yam Kim-Fei, Bak Suit-Sin. It is interesting to compare this clip with my previous upload which stars the duo's students. For this clip, I have done the subtitles myself. I do apologize, that it is slightly out of sync, the words appearing before they are sung!

  • Thanks for reply. I live in Singapore, but had not been able to find copies of these anywhere, including shops in Chinatown.

  • I'm sorry to hear that. Mine were bought some years ago. I'm not sure if those shops are still open. The in thing now is shopping malls and not individual shops! Perhaps when you travel, you could shop around. Keep in touch, k?

  • This is wonderful. 真是听出耳油。 Any idea where can I buy a copy please? Whether CD or DVD. Thanks lots.

  • The VCDs are a bit scarce now, but DVDs are available in most music stores, especially in Hong Kong and in parts of Malaysia where there is a large Chinese population. I have a "highlights" version as well as a "complete" set. All my CDs, VCDs and DVDs were bought in KL.

  • Thanks for sharing. My old mother is enjoying herself now watching your uploaded opera :)

  • You are welcome. Thank you for your encouragement which makes the effort worthwhile!

  • Do you know if there are any Yam/Bak complete movies with subtitles on the web? Or you think I'm going to have to settle for not-subtitled versions of them?

  • Is there anyone who can show me maybe chinese arias or folksongs?

  • 任、白一絕

  • good.good.

  • Thank you for including subtitles! I don't read chinese and speak very little Cantonese. This brings back so many wonderful memories from my childhood in Colorado, when my mother or grandparents would play this. Thanks again!

  • Dancello,

As a child, I heard that Yum Gim Fai was once married, but her husband mistreated her. As for Bak Sweet Sin, she was never married.

    Thank you for your comment!

  • Life is not perfect, even for people who do have real life romances! :-)

YOu could probably try to google for the answer.

Thank you for your comments! Take care and God bless!

  • , I find myself sorry they didn't have a real life romance. It's tempting to forget both actors are women.

Where can I find the history of the Chinese adopting falsetto style singing?

It - obviously was deliberate - since no one speaks like that in real life- ...except those poor men who were castrated.
