  • The album "Gunfighter Ballads" was/is fantastic.

  • I'm not much of a country fan, but I sure am a Marty Robbins fan. Great voice, great writer. He did not write "Strawberry Roan", it is a true cowboy folk song, but so what. Nobody did it better, and nobody has since. "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" is one of the great albums of all time. It has some of Marty's songs on it, and some pure cowboy folk songs, all done excellently! I miss him a lot. He saved a lot of great folk songs from being lost.

  • for the haters get your info straight. he wrote most of his own songs, the guitar is called a mini martin and yes it really does make music and last of all at least he didn't have to use a teleprompter like some. FYI Elvis was great but he had a bad habit of not remembering the words to his songs. Check it out Elvis had the words written on pieces of paper too. Marty was fantastic.

  • Quite simply-Marty was one of the very greatest because he enjoyed what he was doing so much, and communicated that fact so easily. That's what a natural is. There were a very few others who could do it about as well but none better in ANY branch of music. Sinatra of the 50's in jazz/pop maybe. Marty made it look so easy every time.

  • @catamaranman333 He was a very talented musician whether you know it or not. He played piano, guitar, steel guitar. He wrote approximately 500 songs, a number of which went to #1. In his concerts he "played" a lot with the audience so he was not real serious about playing the guitar. He did NOT sing off of cue-cards... As ljriner commented, get our facts before you comment!

  • @ljriner On average, he wrote about 30% of the songs on his albums. Better than most country artists, still not enough for me to consider him a great songwriter. My comment really was aimed at this charade where he holds the guitar and pretends that he's playing as he reads the words to "his songs" off of cue-cards. It just surprises me how easily impressed by cheap music some people are. I'm still waiting for a video where he plays an instrument...

  • @catamaranman333 He did write most of the songs he sang. You need to get your Facts before commenting on a subject.

  • jimmy and stuballs,

I'm in my 6th decade...city boy. I have a simple philosophy about those that criticize artists such as Marty. Go f..k themselves! Where I grew up was not "the country". The closest I got to a horse was at the carnival or Dale Evans and his wife's Adam's Milk events. I grew to love good music no matter the color, gender, or birth place. I always respected those artist that had a message/story and could deliver it with a passion that made one feel.

  • If anyone wants to criticize an artist like him let them start from nothing, work their way up the ranks and become a star who for several decades rarely went without a hit song. I don't like country western music but I like quality. And this man had a beautiful voice. He deserves the recognition. He did something useful with his life and made a lot of people happy in the process.
