This is a Ghawazee dancer - you can tell by her costume. They wore/wear knee length skirts and their belts are made of ribbons (like this one). The costume was designed to accent their movements (like when she twists and the whole skirt intensly goes along. I love the clip - thanks for sharing.

Shocking for its time, yes, but some compassionate centsors, not wishing to deprive audiences completely, simply doctored the film with black stripes to blot out the offending parts of her shimmy.

yes she is American but this movie is one of the oldiest movies and one of the first Turkish images ever filmed in literature(1898)and its actually silent ..the other thing is this is the oriental belly dance and there is nothing to laugh at you guys should be proud of it..absolutely marvelous

Well obviously this is not the musics she danced to. May she be Ghawazee? I took a workshop where the teacher said that the Ghawazee borrowed certain moves from turkish. The pelvic tilt is the one thing looks like a Romany move.
