Abed Azrie & Ana Felip - Suerte Live in Berlin 2006
Abed Azrie's concert "Suerte" is based on 11th century Andalusian texts, symbolizing a possible harmony among people and a mutual acknowledgement of each other's cultures.
The Andalusian civilization was an exceptional model of a pluralistic society in which the three monotheistic religions and peoples from different cultural backgrounds lived together for seven centuries. The cities Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla bear witness to this spirit today.
In his composition Abed Azrie was certainly inspired by this ancient fusion of Orient and Occident. Contrary to the present violence between these cultures, this interaction of mutiple musical expressions with the Oriental, French and Spanish Ensembles bears witness to the richness of intercultural artistic encounters and symbolizes the possibility of a peaceful co-existence and solidarity between cultures.
The ancient music and mythology of the Middle East is fused with modern instrumentation by Syria-born Abed Azrié. Using a mixture of traditional and modern instruments, Azrié takes a fresh approach to the traditions of his birthplace. Exposed to Eastern liturgy as a youngster, Azrié became interested in the popular music of France, the United States and the Mediterranean in his teens. Temporarily moving to Beirut, Azrié studied Arabian literature. In 1967, Azrié settled in Paris, France. With his three albums-"Aromates", "Suerte" and "Epic Of Gilgamesh"-Azrié has offered a musical interpretation of the Sumerian legend of Gilgamesh, Sufi and Arabian poets and Andalusian writers.
