No he shouldn't have gone to jail...they should have pinned a medal to his chest. The guy was escaping from HIS house, with HIS wallet, that he earned via an honest means. Should the criminal have been allowed to run off with his honest, hard earned cash? I think you should be allowed to use lethal force while an intruder is on your property...even if they are escaping.

the problem wasn't that he went to jail for what he did, he should go to jail for killing someone even under these circumstances, the problem is the entire prison system and its corrupt guards.
