From the compilation An Evening with Paul Robeson the Wales National Anthem performed (in English) by the great singer and actor. Taken from an Emitape mono 3 3/4 ips of the early sixties.

Land Of My Fathers

Dear land of my fathers, whose glories were told
By bard and by minstrel who loved thee of old;
Dear country whose sires, that their sons might be free,
Have suffered and perished for thee!

Wales! Wales! Land of mist and wild,
Where'er I roam,
Though far from my home,
The mother is calling her child

The Lord of great Snowdon in brave days of yore
for thee fought for freedom by Mona's green shore
their courage undaunted inspires all our lays
our harps ere resound to their praise.

Wales! Wales! Land of mist and wild,
Where'er I roam,
Though far from my home,
The mother is calling her child

Wales! Wales! Land of mist and wild,
Where'er I roam,
Though far from my home,
The mother is calling her child

  • I think the second verse is actually supposed to go like this.

The Lord of great Snowdon in brave days of yore

for thee fought for freedom by Mona's green shore

their courage undaunted inspires all our lays

our harps ere resound to their praise

"Snowdon" is the highest mountain in Wales, "Mona" is the original name for the isle of Anglesey, an island off the coast of Wales. "Yore" is an older term for old, "lays" is an older term for songs.

  • @TheWraith20878

Many thanks! At last the lyrics of this great anthem and performance are complete.

  • the Lyrics in the description seem to be inaccurate to whats being sung

  • @brettsworld99

I'm Italian and I did my best to transcribe the lyrics, not available elsewhere. If you understand better the lyrics, specifically the central part, you will give us a useful help.

  • @welshcourtland I suppose that always happens when songs/poems/books are translated - there's no such thing as a faithful translation really, is there? Similar ideas are put very differently in different languages & sometimes there isn't a direct translation, so I suppose some translators feel that they can use what they call "artistic licence".

  • The lyrics are not the actual translation from the Welsh language. These words are made up.The anthem of Wales are not the same words.Totally baffled, but a great singer anyway.

  • @melt4ever1 see i didnt mention the people of the valleys you did. the people are some of the greatest people u will ever meet. But the welsh valleys are amoung the most deprived areas in britian and western europe and u can tell when u go there. I call them shitholes because alot of valley towns are, have u seen merthyr, tonmawr, trehafod or heaven forbid fochriw, like i said earlier with all respect. But at least before the torries wales was making stuff but not anymore, never trust a torrie

  • @ruthio1 I would not regard the towns in the valleys as shitholes that is just a derogatory and unjust comment, I think people in the valleys are decent working people and it is not their fault they`re shit upon by not only the Tories but Labour too. I have spent the past 25 years fighting back and building an alternative to the mainstream political parties, its not easy but there is no alternative unless you want to be negative and blame your own class for the conditions they live in.

  • @mike58941 The British Empire doesn't exist anymore and it hasn't for a while. The holocaust was more recent. How is it fair to hate an entire race of people just because their forefathers were conquerors? I've never done anything to any Welshman and I still go through shit everyday just because I was born about 80 miles that way.

  • @melt4ever1 yes so u know yourself being from wales that even our small valleys towns with all respect are shitholes. to be fair not ,many people vote torrie full stop in wales that is proven by its poor track record. The other factor is what happened under thatcher ,Wales was pretty much raped by the torries and wales will never forget

  • @ruthio1 Yes only South Wales is traditionaly working class with strong links to socialist politics and trade unionism. but posh areas as you put it can be found in rural areas such as Mid & West Wales, its the same in the rest of U.K a diverse mixture of class.

Although even the working class vote Tory but that is due to the failure of consecutive Labour governments. I am from Newport Gwent for over 50 years

  • @melt4ever1 welsh torries only win in the poshest areas and in wales posh areas are few and far between. nobody in the real world in wales EVER votes for them, they might aswell not try it will have the same result

  • @ruthio1 Dont get it?

  • @fostersdog What a boring existence you have spell checking other peoples comments get a life
