  • consider this: Yes there was a large anti slavery movement; that is demonstrable--was it anti- racist by no means --i am not pointing fingers--growing up in a country here white supremacy seemed natural (though before the Haitian rebellion that was not the case)----any way why was there no anti Jim Crow movement? None!! among whites wanna explain that one? hows about that with honorable exceptions whites esp northern whites were stone racists

  • @Pillboxesghost Thaddeus Stevens is the only abolitionist I can think of who was anti- racist maybe sumner I am not sure--

  • @bookkeeper57 You need to read a book. Everything pillboxesghost says about Lincoln is true. many visitors to the US from Europe did think the US barbaric for allowing slavery still. And many of those same writers (Alexis deToqueville among them, though he wrote so many years before the war) condemn especially the north saying that racism against blacks was fiercest where the blacks were fewest.

  • When the war started, most of the world had already releasded there slaves. Europe including both England and France (the great powers of the world then) thought the us was barbarick to still own slaves!

  • @Pillboxesghost You need to read a book. Lincoln was a constitutional lawyer, who was morally opposed to slavery; of anyone in the world, but especially in the US where the constitution put slavery at odds with the Bill of Rights. Chamberlain was an educated man, an academic, who fought with distinction in the war. Lincoln was in favor of shipping the slaves to Barbadoes, in lieu of civil war on their behalf. He honestly did not know if they were educable, and said so.

  • The North did not fight to "free the slaves". With the exception of a few abolitionists; Northerners were racist to the core and didn't give a damn about "plight" of black people.

Don't know (but suspect) Chamberlain fought to "preserve the Union".

Lincoln & Chamberlain "preserved" the union like a man would "preserve" his marrage by beating his wife (who left him) senseless and then dragging her home by the hair!

Lincoln was a white supremacist & vile racist. Read his writings!
