The Sunday Times has attempted to smear the British National Party with a fake donation of £5,000 which was given to party leader Nick Griffin in the hope that he would illegally smuggle it into BNP funds in contravention of the law, deputy leader Simon Darby has revealed.

We were well aware of the attempt beforehand, and instead of breaking the law with the Sunday Times money, it was given to the Solidarity Trade Union with which it fought the Walker brothers legal case, Mr Darby said.

He revealed that Mr Griffin had been approached under suspicious circumstances in February this year with a donation of £5,000 - the point at which such a donation had to be reported to the Electoral Commission.
