I've shown you the entire process of making a scarf based on the Jacob's Ladder technique used on Beth Ham's afghan pattern at http://www.freewebs.com/bethintx/jacobsladderafghan.htm

I also just found another video on the Jacob's Ladder technique at http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2009/08/learn-to-crochet-jacobs-ladder-video.html . She uses a different method of finishing off the top and bottom so I thought you might like to visit her page as well.

Part 1 goes through beginning the first rows of the scarf. I've used a pattern of 8 dc, ch 10, 8 dc. You can use any combinations here that you please. Beth uses 10, 10, 10. I've also done scarves using 8, 8, 8.

You can work a shorter chain on the final one or two rows so you won't have such a high loop when you go to finish that last row.

Part 2 makes the cabled ladder and shows finishing.

  • When you work a dc row, you always go into the second stitch, since the turning chain counts as a stitch. That is only for the first stitch of the row. So you will actually work chain up for your turning chain, work 7 dc, skip 10, chain 10, then work 8 dc. You will have one dc for each dc, remembering that your tch counts as a dc.

  • so since you did the second row and you skip a stich at the begging, do you repeat that?

Ch2, skip 1, then 8dh for the rest of the rows or just ch2, 9dh? for the rest of the rows?
