This is a video of me practicing my bottom deal. The point of this video is for me to critique myself by watching the technique, but also for others to point out anything that could be improved upon, or even anything they thought was done particularly well.

The bottom deal I use is straight up, classic Erdnase. That will come as no surprise to anyone who knows me.
Recently, when I have been practicing this move, I've been focusing on rhythm and minimizing finger flash, particularly the left ring finger, which I've managed to keep in-check by using a technique I came up with while working on the deal. (for anyone interested in this little technique, please PM me) In this particular practice, I felt as though I was successful at minimizing flash and also keeping a rhythm, although I did go quite fast at some points.

Also, I feel confident with the start of the deal, as all I am doing is picking up and dealing, with virtually no get ready or repositioning, which is usually a major flaw when people use this deal/grip.

After watching this myself, I can also see two thing, possibly three things that need improvement.

1- The noise when the bottom card is dealt. Although some of the noise is attributed to the snapping down of the card rather than sailing it, the light "swish" can still be heard as the bottom is taken, and is a tell.

2- The illusion. I need to work on the pushing over/pulling back of the top card as the bottom is dealt to aid in the illusion that the bottom card is coming from the top.

3- This one is debatable, and I'm posing this as a question that I would like answered. When I deal the bottom card, I tilt the right side of the deck downwards toward the table. Erdnase advocates this as a way to cover the move. Is the tilting acceptable, or do you believe it is a tell and that it should be removed?

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy description, and also for taking time to watch my video.

All comments and criticisms are welcome.

Thank you, and enjoy.

  • Your critsism was very thourogh, as to criticism 3 i would say its not a tell as long as the other cards are being piched in this case there is nothing to compare it to since the action is different, if there all being dealt down you can deal the tops with the hand tilted to the same angle that way even when you do the bottom there will be no dipping action because the hand will be held at that dipped position through out the deal. The deal was pretty damb boss though, no finger movement.

  • @TheBradTobin Thanks my man! I have you to thank for the no get ready bullshit ;)

  • What I find funny is your shirt says Honor Society and yet you know how to do and execute an excellent bottom deal. :P

  • @7thLunaDancer Hahaha that is rather ironic;D

  • pro :)

  • @pjthunder123 No, there not as good as they sound in my opinion, i would say Erdnase is the best source, not because its classic, but becasuse it realy is the best source to learn a good bottom deal.

  • I am thinking about getting some of Richard Turner's dvd's are they as good as they sound?

  • @pizzaman3088 no I dont live in PA anymore.

  • @pizzaman3088 I havent bought any decks in a loooong time. What deck where you looking for?

  • @JoNsmagic I often deal a strike bottom from the Erdnase grip. It may sound contrary to the crux of the move, but it works for me. I regularly deal from the mechanic's grip, and my ability from this grip (mechanic's) far outweighs/exceeds my ability with the Erdnase grip. One day I may undertake the task of perfecting the (original) Erdnase bottom deal, but as of now i'll stick with the mechanic's grip.

  • oh lord, your technique is the envy of many many manipulators!

    for sure, me!

  • i prefer the strike bottom . i think it is really hard to avoid the finger flash!

  • Nice deals! How do the stingers handle?
