Ryan Freimuth, catcher for the Las Vegas Metro Stars. While playing in Cedar City, Utah he battled hard with a full count. He fouled the ball off 5 times (once not see on video.) The one fouled into the first base dugout was so hard his coach thought the ball was too scuffed and asked for a new ball. Now here is the problem, Ryan was called out for an "intentional hit by pitch." The umpire said he leaned into the final pitch. So whats the call, should he have been called out or should it have been a dead ball??

  • Great at bat!!! On MLB Tonight they showed a clip from the Pirates vs. Reds game, a batter gets called for an intentional hit by pitch. It was a dead ball!! Oh, so mad at that umpire, he was horrible! Really, so many bad calls this game!!

  • @tnnfreimuth Not sure, and I could be wrong, but I think your confusing the rule. You keep mentioning dead ball. Whenever someone is hit by a pitch, its always "Time". If the umpire rules that the batter intentionally tried to get hit, he doesnt get 1st on the HBP. The ump then rules on where the pitch was. If he rules it was out of the zone, its a ball, if ball 4 batter gets first. If ruled a strike, a strike is added to the count. If that makes it 3rd strike, batter is out.

  • @commanderjet97 Well yeah, its a dead ball no matter what. He got hit, so time is called automatically. But since the umpire ruled the batter tried to get hit by the pitch, that changes the outcome. If its a full count, and the ump rules that the pitch wouldve been a ball, then the batter gets first on the walk.. If the ump rules the pitch was in the zone, then the pitch is a strike. If its strike 3, the batter is out.

  • Doesnt matter if it was a great at-bat, how many pitches he fouled off etc. Each pitch is judged on its own. Great call, this is textbook example of a batter trying to get hit by a pitch. As the other poster stated time is called and its a "dead". Since the batter doesnt get first base, the umpire has to determine where the pitch was, when the batter leaned into it. If he judges the pitch was out of the zone, then batter gets first if its ball 4, or in the zone a strike, and if strike 3, out.

  • Well where do I start... the batter DID put his elbow out and leaned into the pitch, now if the pitch was out of the strke zone then we have a "Dead Ball" if a 3-2 count the Batter is awarded first because of the BALL 4 not Hit By Pitch. Now if it pitch was in the strike zone the call is correct... Dead Ball, Batter out on a called 3rd Strike. Just cause you get hit with a pitch it doesn't make it automatic. Based on what I can see from this POV it was a good call.
