Chinese consumers use three billion plastic bags every day, but not for much longer.

A government ban on plastic bags has come into force, part of China's efforts to improve its green image ahead of the Olympic Games.

But as Gerald Tan reports, the environmental benefits come with a social cost.

  • Why do people think it's just plastic bags that's the problem? What about all the other unnecessary packing that we take home from supermarkets?

  • I hate the plastic film bags - it is rare to find a location where there is not at least one littering the ground, hanging in a bush, etc., but banning plastic bags would create a push back to paper bags. One problem solved and another exacerbated. Perhaps a more complete solution is to ban stores from dispensing free bags of any kind, and force our lazy butts to use our own resourcefulness - like carrying reusable bags to do our shopping. Bags made from a renewable resource like hemp fiber.

  • My chinese is by no means perfect but when I listen to the simultaneous translation it is not very accurate. They leave out the first girl's comment about "while it is inconvenient, i think it's worth it to save the environment." Then the next lady is actually saying something about practicalities of paying for a bag.

  • Couldn't they just make biodegradable plastic bags?

  • haha these comments crack me up. none of them are about plastic bags.

people will take any chance they can to argue.

  • It is for military protection. North Korea military always digging tunnels to infiltrate terrorists to destroy South Korea.

Please understand that we want to help North Korean, but we must build wall. It embarrassment, so we plant shrub to hide it.

  • Yes you did have it turned on b/c i tried sending message AND posting on your channel. -__-

I don't know why you bring up these random things such as north or south korea after attacking china for 98% of your posts.

I don't know much about korea, but according to what you said earlier, south korea set but a very tight security to prevent north koreans from sneaking into the country. why is that if you're all the same people?

  • I don't have friends lock turned on. Anyone may post on my channel or send me messages.

I am Korean. We don't see South or North Korean as different peoples. You harm North Korean, you harm Korean.

  • "i will personally kill myself than become a man's sex toy."

You never know until you are in that situation.

These refugees are Korean. China has choice. (1) China can keep them as political refugees. (2) China can return them to South Korea. (3) China can return them to North Korea for execution.

Why does China pick the worst choice?

China says they are economic refugees. Maybe they left North Korea for economic reasons, but if they face execution, they become political.

  • So you "buy and sell children like cabbages" but once they are sold they can leave whenever they want? It's fantasy.

  • (FACT 13. [DA MOST IMPORTANT ONE!!!!~~~<3] I have absolutely no idea why you posted that much shit on my message board other than that you were trying to tell me about North Korea's oh so tragic sob stories. Which by the way, is North Korea's own fucking problem. I don't see how you can drag China into North Korea's own incompetence)
