The first few times you do anything new, like smoking your churchwarden in public, people pick up on your own discomfort and fear of ridicule, and they have less respect for you as a result. But once you get comfortable with yourself, and lose the attitude that cares what others think of you, you'll find that others respect you for just not giving a shit, and your originality will be admired, not insulted. I regularly smoke a churchwarden pipe in public, in fact last night i even went for a smoke outside a nightclub. I smoke it as i prefer it to other pipes, so why not!

Waiting for a bus once I pulled out my carved meerschaum for a smoke. I got a few stares and sideways glances, but it was drizzly outside and I was comfortable leaning against a wall just enjoying the weather.

I just got my Briar Churchwarden in the mail the other day from the USA. (I'm in Sydney, Australia) I've only smoked it a few times, but since I am almost out of tobacco, I think I'll take it with me into town next time I visit the Tobacconist and smoke it out in public to see what the reactions are. Of course, I'll be wearing a collared shirt and a Panama when I do it!

My attitude about any person judging is basically "I'm not you! Nor do I think like you! And I don't care if the world thanks I"m wired! I'm sorry you're self conscious about the pipe in public! There for the first few years of my pipe smoking, I was a little self conscious also. After a while I started to turn the table around. It was like "what! This is what I do! What have you done with your self?" It is an instrument of pleasure and contemplation. Great minds use it! And besides, what idiot driving down the road is ashamed to blast their stupidity to everyone? Smoke it with pride! I love your chirchwardens...my favorite kind!

I have smoked unusual pipes in public whilst wearing a blues-trilby and you will always get silly comments along with the people who want to do it themselves but never had the confidence so I just do it and to fuck with it.I live in Liverpool so you become case hardened to anything because we have the greatest and caustic wits anywere on the planet.Cheers.
