Guy's voice is too clean and white-bread for this role. Needs more dirty hippie feel, more blues gruffness.

I'm going to have to agree with you. Vocal riffing is cool if done sparingly, but the performers in this particular cast do it too much. Pretty much of every line is used as an excuse to show off their vocal abilities; Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson knew the show well enough that they maintained a perfect balance between showboating and storytelling.

I did that... Gotta say that The Vasilis Axiotis version, alongside Matt Siddi, are the ones that rocks me the most atm.
Otherwise I have to say that Ian Gillan is GOD ;)

This guy has always struck me as too show-boaty for the role. Too many vocal riffs. Forgets what the song is about.
