@Thundernuts691 As I explained, the situation differed greatly in Scotland and Ireland. Whilst Ireland's economy was based almost entirely on agriculture, Scotland had become industrialised. Ireland's agricultural sector consisted largely of either Cotters or landless-labourers - who quite obviously had literally no income. It was subsistence farming - therefore, when the food was gone, they had nothing. The British misunderstood the problem, and therefore could not act accordingly.

@Thundernuts691 Oh, the Scottish Famine which forced 1.7million Scottish people to emigrate? Cottier farming wasn't even the most popular form of agriculture, execpt in some Highland areas. Luckily, with the aid of Sir Edward Pine Coffin, Oatmeal and supplies were quickly distributed - with much better organisation than in Ireland. In Ireland, the Government urged the people not to worry, and that the next crop would be free from blight - it wasn't, and many sufffered.

By reducing the size of farms, Landlords were able to gather more rent from their land. This, however, made it a necessity for the Peasants to plant vegetable with a high yield. Not only were potatos high yield, but they also took up much less space. The farmers were, however, obliged to give a portion of their yield to the Landlord - even during the Famine.
