"Chantal" On DVD November 13, 2007 -
Fron the liner notes by Ed Grant:
The effect is memorably unsettling, and contrasts with the film's grotesque interiors: Chantal was shot in various real apartments and an actual photography studio, but the settings that will remain in the memory are the ineffably skuzzy locations where Chantal suffers her greatest humiliations. In the moments where Marsiglia lets his imagination run free, one can see traces of various disturbing dream-movies past, from Daughter of Horror to "the new wave Expressionist" films of the '80s (the works of Stephen Sayadian, aka "Rinse Dream," and also Richard Elfman) that used surreal skewed, surreal theatrical tableaux to mess with the viewer's mind. Tony reflects on the feverishly weird elements included here as "characterizing Chantal's descent. It was a conscious decision to create a progressive claustrophobic environment. Chantal's obstacles only get greater as she finds herself in increasingly threatening surroundings."
Writer/director Tony Marsiglia (Sinful, Lust for Dracula) and actress Misty Mundae (Shock-O-Rama, Sinful) team up once again to deliver a remake of the shocking cult oddity from 1969. Chantal is a tragic and terrifying portrait of a young actress victimized at the hands of modern-day Hollywood.
