Its because the G1 did not have multitouch, im sure it will be released with it shortly, also your htc hero is running very slow! get that bad boy updated
the htc hero / g2 touch phone supports multi touch feature, it is implemented in the browser and album viewer. Therefore its the the google map apt that dos'nt allow pinch zooming in this case, unfortunately. hopefuly it will be fixed though. :(

Right, the presentation layer cares about multi touch or not... it's the phone or the OS that supports or does not support guesture control...
