Shot on July 4, 2007 with a home made camcar pushed by a coal burning 1" scale Cole's 0-4-0 switcher around the Waushakum highline. As an engineer riding on the highline, you never get this view of the foreground rail and ties rushing by. Some of the run really looks like a roller coaster ride. As we leave the station, we go up hill to the covered bridge, then down hill looping under the covered bridge, the low spot of the track. Then it is up hill to the trestle, the high point of the track and we go roaring down into the station area. I made the round trip on one firing. It is about 2300 feet long and took about 7.5 minutes. The engine is 1/12 scale, so do the math to get our scale speed.

  • The model locomotive is moving 3.3348 mph average.

The scale speed is 40.019 mph

  • how come you have 3 rails on the track?

  • We have 3 rails because our raised track (called highline) is dual gauge. The common rail is the one on the right side. The left side rail is scaled 1" to a foot when used with the right side rail. The distance between the rails is 4.75" The inside track is scaled 3/4" to a foot, or 1/16 scale, when used with the right side rail. The distance between the rails is 3.5".

  • So essentially then, you can run 2 different types of equipment that requires 2 different types of gauge between the rails with the 3 rails, or am I way off?

  • That is correct, 2 track gauges are present.
