A Melbourne mother is preparing to sue a local hospital after doctors left a 30cm surgical instrument inside her bowel during an operation.

Marion Fernando, 42, from Narre Warren South in Melbourne's east, suffered for six days after surgeons at Dandenong hospital left the metal object inside her during a hysterectomy procedure last Thursday.

The mother-of-four was discharged three days after the operation despite telling nurses she was in agony.

Mrs Fernando's husband, Rohan Weerapperamage, told Nine News: "She couldn't stand up, she couldn't sit down, she couldn't go to the toilet".

He took her to a GP yesterday where they were advised to go back to hospital.

The waited for two hours at Dandenong Hospital before an X-ray revealed the 30cm instrument lodged in her bowel.

Mrs Fernando, 42, was operated on for a second time and doctors removed the instrument.

She is due to be released from hospital on Friday.

Mr Weerapperamage said: "I don't want this to happen to anybody else — they should be very careful of this sort of thing".

"I have four kids, if something happens to her, I wouldn't know what to do."
