Salazar was a good runner who willed himself to greatness. Saw him race Henry Rono at Eugene in a 10,000 in driving rainstorm . Rono won in 27:29. At that time fastest 10k in us history. Salazar was .10 seconds back. Been to NBA final and world series but nothing was better than race. 25 laps and no one sat or stop clapping the whole way
This marathon can KILL you if you don't do the right things. Salazar was never the same after this. A recent example is Catherine Ndereba, who was the women's champion three times, the third time almost killed her as she was in la-la land after the finish, and she's never been the same.
I understand that Salazar's body temperture soared so high after this race he was at deaths door and had to be immersed in a tub of icewater and fed intraveneously. I wish someone on youtube had the 83 NYC race where Rod Dixon chased Geoff Smith for 10 miles and finally ran him down at the 26 mile marker. Another great duel in marathon history.
A great book was written about this race, "Dual In The Sun". It's incredible what happen to both Salazar and Beardsley before and after the 1982 Boston Marathon. Trimumph and tragedy. Salazar practically ruined his body by having only two cups of water during the 82 Boston. He got severely overheated and never really recovered. Beardsley years later got into a farming accident, was given pain killers and became addicted to them. And later Salazar would even have a heart attack.
Actually it is the other way around. Salazar was never the same after that race. Beardsley was injured in a tragic accident involving farm machinery....
I don't know about video but there's a dude who does a running podcast called "Phedippidations" and he recently did a whole hour-long episode on the 1982 Boston which featured some outstanding audio from the event. Maybe you can try that first. Maybe email him? You can find the podcast on iTunes.
I'm reading "Duel in the Sun" too. Can NOT put it down. I saw Salazar running the NYC marathon twice. I'll never forget that first one -- I think it was '81 -- at about mile 17 on 1st Avenue. He ran by like a Greek god and we all went absolutely crazy. I'd love to see a video of the whole Boston '82 too. Bet BAA has it somewhere ... but thanks for the clip -- wonderful!
3:12:00. 1981. It was great.
