From HumanureHandbook.com: This toilet can be erected quickly and cheaply, then removed when the festival, conference, colloquium, or camping experience is over, leaving nothing whatsoever behind, not even a turd. The 6'X16' bamboo mat is available from Home Depot or Lowes for about $20, and it is attached to six metal stakes, also available at the same stores. The humanure toilet is based on the design as depicted in the Humanure Handbook (http://www.jenkinsslate.com/store_books.html#hh), or you can see how to make a humanure toilet online at http://www.jenkinspublishing.com/sawdustoilet.html).

If you use 8' stakes, you can wire 2X2s to the top of them and then attach some sort of roofing over the toilet for use in all weather.

This bamboo toilet design was the brainchild of Larry Warnberg (http://solartoilet.com/).

  • What do you do with the poo when you get home?

  • @paradigm918 Compost it.

  • Not with the modest amount of cover material illustrated in the video, it doesn't. I'll "go" along with Mr. Hobbit's recommendations. I was frankly stunned by how close it was to the campsite. Amen to the hand sanitizer.

  • You obviously have no experience whatsoever with a humanure toilet. You can have it right inside your tent if you want. Closeness to the campsite is one of the benefits of this type of toilet. No flies, no odor, no contamination. They make porta-johns for those of you who don't understand this fact.

  • Quite a great start at a design. Might I add that if the waste is not completely sealed from insects and vermin, it is a source of contamination on the site. Simple gaskets under the seat lid and between the seat and the bucket are required so that every curious fly isn't visiting everyone's lunch _after_ a peck at the poo... I've seen this vector ignored many times, and with kitchens nearby, it will ruin some folk's experience at ad hoc gatherings. Remember hand wash station right by too!

  • The cover material completely prevents access to the toilet contents by flies and other insects. The standard toilet seat lid prevents access by animals. There is no contamination with this sort of toilet when used properly.

  • DISGUSTING.

  • i went to camp as a kid in kerrville, or close to kerrville texas ... camp rio vista.

what i want to know is where the heck does all of this sawdust come from ... is there nothing else to use than sawdust? It seems OK compared to the big plastic port-a-potties, but kind of gross looking.

  • Could I also suggest placing a paper grocery bag (maybe even double or triple bagged) inside of the bucket? This way when you empty it you don't have anything nasty sticking to the sides so there would be much less cleanup! While the bag may be a little damp, 2-3 bags should give enough strength to pull it out without tearing.

I believe that this could be composted after wards even though people are ignorant (meaning not knowing, not stupid..) to this idea.

Did you come up with that idea?

  • Great idea! You could also apply used coffee grounds (dried preferably) as well which might mask any smell which could escape. You can get coffee grounds from you local starbucks or probably even Dunkin Donuts!

Having one of these in a shop, shed or barn would also me nice. Even putting one in a cabin that doesn't have indoor plumbing would be great! I don't want to have to go outside in the middle of the winter! ( Burrrrr..)

    +5!

  • i thought it was to balance nitrogen and carbon ratios? im sure it has all of those functions.

  • I've never tried it myself. I guess what I meant by wood shavings are little chips or little blocks of wood. I don't know what kind though.

  • does that actually work? I'll put wood chips in my drinks, if flies won't touch them... I have never heard of that before.

  • a lil roof too keep sum sun out might be handy..depending on where your able to set it up
