American Cancer Society -- Cancer Prevention

The American Cancer Society is waging a "war on cancer" and for many types of cancer, there is still no cure. Cancer prevention and cancer recovery strategies such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and smart lifestyle choices are highly recommended.

Nearly 70% of all cancer deaths can be attributed to smoking, eating and drinking habits, as well as a sedentary lifestyle. Watch as Dr. Nagy points out some very simple cancer prevention tips. In general, cancer risk can be reduced by living a healthier lifestyle. Start with your cancer prevention by eating healthy foods and exercising regularly.

There are certain types of cancers that have distinctive warning signs, and health professionals have identified specific early cancer prevention strategies. Lung cancer risk is reduced dramatically by not smoking. 95% of colon cancers are attributed to polyps (which take an average of 15 years to develop into cancer). A colonoscopy would reveal any signs of polyps and prompt your doctor to remove them to reduce your risk of colon cancer. On average, annual colonoscopy screening should start at age 50. For early breast cancer detection, women should have annual mammogram screenings starting at age 40. Skin cancer is one of the most common but also preventable forms of cancer. To reduce your risk avoid the sun, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (this is the time when sun rays are the most powerful). Stay away from tanning booths! Wear sunglasses that block UVA sunlight. Have your skin checked for skin cancer regularly.

The American Cancer Society Website has valuable information on cancer prevention and should be used as a regular resource; here is an example of a few of the topics covered on The American Cancer Society's Website.
