Paul Specht & His Hotel Astor Orchestra (see photograph at beginning of clip) play "All Muddled Up" (composed by Percy Wenrich) a classic novelty almost worthy of Zez Confrey. The writer was most famous for having composed "When You Wore A Tulip And I Wore a Big Red Rose" (1914) and "On Moonlight Bay" (1912), but Wenrich also had his finger in the pie of ragtime songs ("Alamo Rag" is one). The pianist heard on the record is the prolific and fearless Arthur Schutt, who made countless recordings as studio pianist in the years between world wars I and II. The original Columbia record (A-3740) was made acoustically (without microphones or electrical sound waves) in a studio perhaps identical to the one in the photo. Recorded 2009 using a Victor V Talking Machine, RCA 44-BX velocity microphone and digital audio tape.

  • Why on Earth would you use a High Fidelity Ribbon RCA 44-BX Microphone to record a Victrola Recording????

  • It's not a Victrola, it's a Victor V. The microphone captures bass and mid-range better than modern ones.

  • @BJSTV Why not? Better than using the camera's built-in mic...!

  • Delightful! Thanks for posting.

  • A charming and catchy rag.

Wenrich wrote lots of great songs like, "Put

    On Your Old Gray Bonnet."

    Tx 4 the fun post.
