For some aspects have to think that it took years of research to get to a combat aircraft Harrier.

There have been many failures. Sometimes I think there are improvements in aircraft.

F-35 vertical take-off is something new. X-32 is conservative same technology of Harrier, very good aircraft. However ( vstol.org ) you have to try something new.

Sometimes F-35 resembles the Yak-141. But the engine is new, you have to try new things.

I would love to see a marriage between the YF23 and the F32. Imagine the YF23 with VTOL. Pilot's high observability of surroundings with the F32 cockpit would be a bonus.
