On Thursday, December 3rd, EngenderHealth co-hosted a lively event at the Paley Center in New York with Equality Now and Ashoka featuring each organization's leader in conversation with Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, authors of Half the Sky. The speakers and audience members engaged in a stimulating discussion on many dimensions of womens health, rights, and welfare, with moderating by Maria Hinojosa of NOW on PBS. Watch the video and learn more about a range of subjects, from media representations of women and girls to the decline of the footbinding tradition in China.

Part 1 of the video includes discussion among the panelists, and Part 2 features the panelists responding to questions from the audience.

  • 37:40 "What we're trying to work on is destroy all the negative media that really affects women & girls -- and the commodification, pornification, objectification of girls.

    We're looking for a youth movement that challenges the media structure. We haven't talked about the sex industry & the pornography industry that is a multi-billion dollar industry that has a *lot* of influence on the media. That is an impediment to equality that we haven't even started to tackle."
