I know this is pedantic and totally missing the point, but there were a whole bunch of Irish slaves transported to the Americas in the 17th century. Personally I think this is worth mentioning, cos its all too convenient for rich left-wingers to act as if slavery etc is purely a 'black' problem and therefore you can fence it off as a race issue. On the other hand, this IS hilarious.

Go back further and look up how the Islamic enslaved the Africans first and introduced it to the Europeans later. Also, the Muslim northern African countries also lived off of the christian European slaves and privates for centuries. Where the countries paying for them to leave them alone, and in 1812 the newly built American navy went in there to fix the problem.

It's weird how people only refer to slavery as a white/black issue. Most cultures have, at one time or another, enslaved the less privileged of their own race, much of this taking place long after slavery in America. Not to mention slavery is still going on in various places around the world, etc. etc. It's an issue of human rights for everyone, not just one group of people in one country.
