The M1A1 is an improved version of the M1 Main Battle Tank (MBT). It includes a 120mm smoothbore main gun, an NBC overpressure protection system, and an improved armor package. This tank significantly increases the capabilities of the Army across the full spectrum of conflict in the near and midterm. Engagement ranges approaching 4000 meters were successfully demonstrated during Operation Desert Storm. The latest version is the M1A2, however this has yet to be fully deployed.




The M1A1/2 Abrams main battle tank is manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS). The first M1 tank was produced in 1978, the M1A1 in 1985 and the M1A2 in 1986. 3,273 M1 tanks were produced for the US Army. 4,796 M1A1 tanks were built for the US Army, 221 for the US Marines and 555 co-produced with Egypt. 77 M1A2 tanks have been built for the US Army, 315 for Saudi Arabia and 218 for Kuwait. For the M1A2 Upgrade Program, 1079 M1 Abrams tanks are being upgraded to M1A2 configuration.

In February 2001, GDLS were contracted to supply 240 M1A2 tanks with a system enhancement package (SEP). The M1A2 SEP contains an embedded version of the US Army's Force XXI command and control architecture; new Raytheon Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer (CITV) with second generation thermal imager; commander's display for digital color terrain maps; second generation thermal imaging gunners sight with increased range; driver's integrated display and thermal management system. The US Army has plans to procure 1150 M1A2 SEP tanks to be in service by 2004.

@lunkprab There really isn't anything except a simple filter which is replaced constantly. I think I read somewhere for every hour an Abrams operate its like 3 hours of maintenance and clean up to keep it running...

I forgot to mention that the Abrams also use Kinetic energy rounds (sabot) rounds and he have the worlds best fire control system. Their guns have been upgraded. I also found out that no crewman have ever been lost in a Abrams. They have been disabled but were sent back to the states to be repaired. Then shipped back into combat.

@RancidElf32 one huge horizontal pre cleaner mounted on top of air filter housing,sucks rocks twigs and all the big stuff through it away from the primaries and ejects it out the left/rear of tank exhaust grille, 3 primary air filters in housing, sealed to the intake housing by clamps. it takes about that long (3) hours to clean depending on conditions. I loved it(being a crewman) for 9 years.

@RancidElf32 minor mistake , sabo :D if any doesent no what i sabo round is , look it um on ytube , you will find it , its like a big needle but in a casing so it can get thrown by the abrams massive tank gun , then the cassing peals off them in seconds hits enemys tank , EXPLOSION , MASSIVE FLAMES
