A lot of people don't realize this, but he wrote this song BEFORE he ever did heroin. It was in the last few years of his life that he started smoking thousands of dollars worth of crack and heroin a day (he didn't shoot up). - Other great E.S. songs about addiction - "A Passing Feeling", "King's Crossing", "White Lady Loves You More", "Junk Bond Trader", "Strung Out Again" - Also, Elliott didn't like to establish specific meanings to his music, he wanted to leave that up to the listener.
