This will fix your Movie Maker from crashing
(Windows XP users only)

Microsoft has an updated WMM version 2.6 available for vista users.

I'm not sure this (last resort process) will work but give it a try
I set up a download for you so you can copy a good movie maker installation over your other one.
Save both of these files to your pc if the video did not work for you.

~~STEP TWO INSTRUCTIONS~~
Unzip the contents of wmm.zip file to:
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
(over wright existing files)

You want to make sure you end up with this:
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
Not This:
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Movie Maker

Unzip the inf.zip file to:
C:\WINDOWS\inf (Over wright the existing files here also if any).

@HUNKillerMan Most times when I have seen peeps complain about that it is because you are pointing to the wrong one or the wrong file location. just try again but pay real close attention

okay I have a problem

I tried to do all of these steps, but I have windows 7 so some things are way different. I downloaded the new 2010 movie maker add on, but it didn't help. Every time I click out of movie maker it will not let me back on. So I have to restart my computer just to get on it again. can you please help me?

@FangTheMotherWolf Not sure why it would stay running and not let you back in, if you right click on your lower tool bar (system bar) or use CTRL+ALT+DEL to enter the task manager, go into the process tab and look for movie maker and right click on it to end the process. then you should be able to go back in without restarting.

@BetaFlux I'm sorry I don't think I worded it right. What I meant was when I exit wmm I can not go into it again unless I restart my computer. It's like it will only let me on it one time and once I exit wmm I can't get on it again.

@FangTheMotherWolf I know. Usually when it locks you out it is because it is still running in the process. If you go into task manager and it is not still running in the process than I'm not sure why it would lock you out.

@chubakagirl If the message gives you a link to download the codec, then you should follow the link. If not, there may be an error code. You should google that error code.

That's your best bet, I think. If nothing works, tell me what file type the movie is (.avi, .wmv, .mpg, or something like that).
