The Shinsengumi raid in the amazing Kenshin OVA, is one of my favorite anime sequences.

It was probably inspiried by this part of the 1971 japanese movie called "Shinsengumi: Assassins of Honor"

It actualy matches more than you just see in this video, becuase in the anime the Shinsengumi are looking to raid on an important Shogunate gathering (based on real like historic events), but catch the wrong gathering (while the real historic gatheting took place in a different location), in the movie it is the same, and is shown in an identicle manner.

Watch how in the anime the candle is being cut down to bring about darkness, to allow an advantage for the defending group who are out numbering the Shinsengumi. In the movie it is the exact same. The fight is just longer. And you see Okita spitting blood due to his illness (in the anime it is shown towards the end, in the very last epic fight sequence between Kenshin and Saitou).

This clip is of an actual historical incident known as the "Ikedaya Jiken" or "Ikedaya Affair," which occurred on July 18, 1864 during the struggle between the Shinsengumi, a police force loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate Forces, and the shishi, masterless samurai employed by the Choshu and Tosa clans, anti-foreigner forces loyal to the Emperor. The shishi were allegedly plotting to burn down Kyoto and kidnap the Aizo caln daimyo.

The movie this scene is taken from is "Shinsengumi" from 1969.

It is not the best Shinsengumi movie I've ever seen, there are SO MANY movies in Japan about Shinsengumi. But the raid in this one is just so much like the Kenshin anime :-)

If you want to see a nice new movie with Shinsengumi, watch the 2004 amazing movie "When The Last Sword is Drawn"

  • Damn, just how many people are in that house? The enemies keep coming out of nowhere :-)

  • is that Toshiro Mifune?

  • Mifune when you need every m*****f***ing a**hole in the room dead before you can say 'that's a lot of blood!'.

Thanks for the upload, Toshiro Mifune will be missed.

  • no esa inspirada en las ova de samurai x. si no en el clan. se ve su vida tal cual como es , igual que en el anime hakuoki shinsengumi kitan. solo que metieron demonios pero es lo mismo mismo , quitale los demonios y es la verdadera historia.

  • there is also a 48 Episode Taiga Drama called Shinsengumi, I am currently watching Ryoma Den which shows the other side of the story, which is also interesting. I see a lot of similarities about the Shinsengumi and radical islamic groups. Both perceive the demand of "opening" or "westernization" as threat and they feel they have to retaliate. While the common folks start dancing in a frenzy Ee Ja Nai Ka or Dhamaal because the sudden changes cause a sensation of rupture...

  • where can I watch this full movie/series?

  • Mifune!!!!! :D *squeals like a teenage girl*

  • nice noticing

  • is it really that easy to get on top of those roofs like that?

  • the name of this movie??? plz

  • Was that Okita fighting on the roof like in the anime?

  • ok seriously i know the shinsengumi were practicly the best on their side but c'mon they were not that badly outnumbered.
