mine does this too (just got it today from the amazon sale). i don't think it's normal, and my launch ps3 did not make that noise, but so far my searches on the internet haven't let me know if it's a problem or not.

@svicciarelli I took mine back and reproduced the fault in the store, compared to their floor model which is whisper quiet, they exchanged it for me. I suggest you do that too.
