  • Yes actually I found out once I took the rad off for the third time that the fan was very slightly loose. I bought a 2 inch, thin, $0.38 washer and tightened it down and now the noise is gone.

  • Oh my God, I have been driven nuts by this clatter for at least five years. I ran out and bought a washer and installed it like you said . It could'nt be this simple. .Absolutely no more clatter. Thank you so much. The bike is a joy to drive once again.

  • Does any one know about the water pump in the cx500?

  • Although this is an old Vid/Thread if anyone wants to get rid of the Mechanical fan just put globalcxglvtwins into Google and under the engine section I've modded both my CX500s with Ducati Electric Fans thermostatically controlled.

  • London despatch riders like myself did hundreds of thousands of miles on our cx500s and they were the most reliable bikes you could get. They are now up to 32 years old-expect some problems!

  • That sounds so familiar mine did the same thing, for lack of cash i put a small electric on mine. Works great, make sure to get a low amperage one though. Seems to me the output of the alternator on these isnt real strong.

  • i know exactly what you mean. just this weekend, on a 7 hour ride my 81 cx500c fan had two of the blades break while holding the bike @ about 70 mph, putting a nice big hole in my radiator, 2 hours from home. thanks for the cheap plastic honda!

  • The cx500 fan sometimes breaks in the middle where the shaft goes in. If you take the fan off you will see what im talking about. You can use a washer to fix the problem but if you do you may have to use a slightly longer bolt. Another thing to do is get one off of Ebay or like said before get an electric fan. It can ruin your radiator (and your day) if the fan decides to blow up especially if you are out of town!!

  • CX's original fans are rubbish, believe me. It might crash into pieces on high revs, destroying the radiator and making hell of a inconvienence on a trip... so why dont you install an electric fan with a thermostat from later CX versions ? Everything is better than this crap ! I used the cheapest, second-hand car fan and it has been serving me for over a decade and never let me down.

  • Sounds like fan is striking shroud.???
