Helen Neal was determined to become a teacher, despite the odds.
When the now-82-year-old walked across the stage in 1962, she became one of the first black women to earn a diploma at what now is West Texas A&M University. She went on to teach in public schools in Amarillo for 21 years.
Neal is but one of 47,391 students who obtained bachelor's degrees from West Texas A&M University in Canyon through December 2009. The newest crop of WT graduates walked the stage Saturday. University spokeswoman Rana McDonald said about 900 students applied to graduate - one of the largest graduation classes in the 100-year history of the university.
