Shoulder dislocations are common in contact sports. The commonest type is an anterior dislocation. Here the ball of the socket comes out the front of the shoulder joint. Most of these injuries can be dealt with by arthroscopic or keyhole techniques but if a shoulder has had numerous dislocations over a period of time then this may not be possible.
In these types of shoulders there may have been a bony fracture of the front (anterior) part of the glenoid (socket) which allows the humeral head (ball) to come out.
In recurrent dislocations there may also be damage to the back of the humeral head called a Hill-Sachs lesion. This further contributes to the ability of the humeral head to come out.
These types of shoulder injuries can be treated by open surgical stabilisation with a bone transfer into the defect at the front of the glenoid to stop the humeral head from dislocating out the front. A Latarjet proceedure is an open bone stabilising procedure.
