Paul Gilbert plays Hey Joe live at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival 1991, from the Tribute To Jimi Hendrix CD

"This CD was a total accident.

And I LOVE IT!!!

It was supposed to be an album featuring legendary blues guitarist, Albert Collins.

Alvin Lee(from "Ten Years After")and I were going to make guest appearances on a few tunes. The whole record was to be recorded live at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in Germany.

I flew to Frankfurt at the end of Mr. Big's European leg of the "Lean Into It" tour to do the show. When I got there, everyone was panicking because Albert Collins and his band hadn't shown up! It turned out that Albert had some health problems and couldn't make it.

The promoter and the people from the record company were all trying to figure out what to do. They asked me if I could do a 45 minute concert on my own. I replied that I didn't have a band! They quickly solved that problem by enlisting the bassist and drummer from Alvin Lee's "Ten Years After" and giving us four hours to rehearse for the show THAT NIGHT!

I thought Jimi Hendrix songs would be cool to play because they work well with a three-piece band, and I knew most of the lyrics already(plus I love Hendrix!!). In four hours, we managed to rehearse 5 songs, which I knew wouldn't add up to 45 minutes. I joked to the promoter that I could make it happen if I did REALLY LONG solos. He thought is was a great idea and said, "It's a JAZZ festival! The solos are SUPPOSED to be long! Everyone will love it!!!"

So the album is live, raw, and probably much more in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix than if I had spent months in preparation(which I otherwise would have felt obligated to do to honor Jimi!). And yes, the solos are long! EVERY LICK I KNOW is on this CD. I had to use them all to fill the time!!"
