  • Mr. Russ...we have a calf that it's mama just died this am...we have bottle fed before, but this guy is not taking to the bottle. He is about 2 weeks old. He tried to take up with another mama, but she wouldn't have it.

I cut bigger slits in the nipple to help him get the hang of it. Any tips?

  • @gritsmama You're doing everything right. Cut the slits about 1/2 inch. You've got to force the calf to take it about 3 times a day. The calf will get it. Keep at it.

  • Hello, You feed the cows the same way all the time, 12% protein feed, all the grass they want and a mineral block to lick on. The calf can drink from the mother but they bottle feed it to get the calf used to being handled and to train it to be comfortable with humans so it will easier to handle.when it gets bigger.

  • cool vid thanks hope you make more

  • Working on one with Russ harvesting honey from his hives right now, it won't be too long before it's released.

  • This cow is good about standing still while being milked. For a cow that wants to move or pick her feet up while being milked, put your head in her flank and you can feel her start to move. When she does that just put your arm against her leg and she will stop. I have been milking cows by hand for almost sixty years I also hold the bucket between my legs. I have never had a cow step in a bucket or kick one over. For those who have milked cows by hand you know what I'm talking about.

  • Thank you very much Russ, I quite literally have almost nowhere else I could learn the stuff you teach, I really appreciate you taking the time to make the videos and how clear and matter-of-fact you are!

  • Thank you, very informative.

  • So much for making a sexual joke so funny that I spit milk out my nose...

  • If any family cow or goat owners want to go on a vacation and need some one to take care of their animals and feed and milk them I'd be glad to visit their place at my own expense and stay their for up to two weeks and take care of their dairy animals. They do not have to pay me unless they have 100 or more animals. Send me a message through my Google channel.

  • @assman225 put it on a stove at 175 F for 30 mins exactly and then put it in sink or something with iced water until the temp is 40 F and then store in fridge. Then that's it pasteurised.

  • wonder why 2 people thumbs down?

  • how do i make a cows milk drinkable?
