British Railways 7P6F Britannia Class No: 70013 Oliver Cromwell hustles through Finsbury Park on the Down-Fast-line at the head of the Railway Touring Company Down Lindum Fayre railtour from London-King's Cross to Lincoln-Central and return on Saturday 3rd December 2011. Oliver Cromwell, had an identical load to its sister engine, Britannia, 12 vehicles weighing more than 400 tons.
Steam specials on the East Coast main line are quite rare. Oliver Cromwell''s run is only the 9th down steam special to pass Finsbury Park this year.
Some of you may be saying where was Dominion of New Zealand? A good question. I believe it's at Eastleigh and is due to work the Bath Spa Christmas Express on Wednesday and, which is fully booked so DNZ was substituted by Ollie. A great sub.
As you can see I and other enthusiasts was expecting Ollie to pass on the Down Relief. We were agog when we could hear Ollie but only saw a First Capital Connect (FCC) 313 come into view. You can hear the station supervisor shout out "its on the fast" so we all hurried across to the Down-Fast. Ollie was going beautifully, steadily climbing the hill towards Potter's Bar.
Today's Finsbury Park has 6 Platforms. Platforms 1 faces the Up Goods line and is little used. Platform 2 is the platform for FCC commuter trains heading for King's Cross and, during the week Moorgate. Platform 3 is on the Up Fast but FCC semi-fast trains call there on their way to King's Cross
I was on 4 and 5, an island platform. 4 is the Down Fast where semi-fast FCC trains for Cambridge and Peterborough call. 5 isn't used. 6 and 7 is also an island. 6 is for FCC commuter trains calling at all stations to Welwyn Garden City and Hertford North. Some Cambridge trains call there as well. 7 isn't used and faces the Down Goods.
Finsbury Park was opened by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in 1861 (11 years after the line opened) and originally only had two platforms. The station was named Seven Sisters Road-Holloway. Where I was standing was roughly where the old Up Platform was. In 1867 the stationed increased to four Platforms to mark the widening of the main-line from King's Cross and the opening of the branch-line to Edgware.
