pretty average acceleration considering its 451hp...

listen to the transmission and transfer case for any grinding or popping. And turn the wheel while accelerating to see if the front axles are good. Cooling systems can be troublesome as well at that age. If its had the radiator, expansion tank, and waterpump replaced recently, then its probably good. They also like to leak from the power steering hoses. I'm a BMW technician at a dealership. They are really good cars, just when they break, they can be expensive.
stupid question - what's the fuel economy of this beast?

Highway mileage doesn't seem to be much different than when it was stock - 15-18ish. Around town, since it's hard not to step on it more often, it's 10 or lower. IOW, it seems to be different mostly to the extent that you drive differently...

I am just aboput to buy one, I have no experience of it. it will be 2002/03 model. Anything I should be aware of? any bad points/problems?

I'd have it checked over by a Dinan-authorized BMW dealer. Even if everything checks out, I think it's smart to assume it will cost you more a few grand a year more to maintain than a stock 4.6is (not for anything specific - just stuff that MIGHT wear out "early" due to the extra stress of all that extra power). Even with those extra costs, it's lots cheaper than buying a new X5, and it'll be WAY faster and more fun to drive! I swear, it feels and sounds like a frickin muscle car! ;-)
