Alternating High cable bar wood chops are an exercise which challenges your core, obliques, balance and coordination. They will also secondarily work your shoulders, chest and arms.
Start by attaching the bar to a high cable pulley and selecting a light to moderate weight. Stand facing to either side of the weight stack. Grasp the bar with an alternating grip. If you are turning to your left your right hand should be on the upper part of the bar with your palm facing away from you while your left hand should be on the bottom of the bar with your hand facing towards you.
Stand in an athletic stance with your feet spread a couple feet apart with your knees slightly bent. Walk a couple steps away from the machine so the weight stack is suspended.
Begin the motion by rotating your hip and moving your upper arm across your body so that the path of the bar passes your belly button. As you perform the chopping motion your upper hand should be taking most of the resistance while your lower hand should be used more as a guide ending up going around your hip.
Smoothly transition into a chop in the other direction keep holding the bar with your lower hand, move your upper hand to the bottom position and turn around towards the machine in the other direction and repeat the chops.
Always keep your core tight for the duration of this or any core exercise.
