I'm seeing the magnapinna squid being referred to as a bigfin squid. I think it's more common name is a longarm squid. If you search "bigfin squid" wikipedia does come up with a link to the magnipinnas, but try it by searching on the actual scientific name of the squid in the video and you'll find several sources referring to it as a bigfin squid, or bigfin reef squid, or oval squid (there may be other common names for all I know) and stated that it is not a cuttlefish.

  • Wow. I'm surprised at how strong opinion is that these are cuttlefish.

It is not uncommon for common names to be shared. I've posted the scientific name of these squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana, and a simple search would show similar photos.

    continued....

  • Sepioteuthis lessoniana

Commonly known as Bigfin Squid, Bigfin Reef Squid, Oval Squid.

The "sepio" in their scientific name refers to their cuttle-like appearance.

Everything I can find on them says they're a squid.

  • Those are actual squid. Google difference between squid and cuttlefish and you'll find numerous explanations. In this case, it's helpful to know the species, and these are Bigfin Squid, a reef squid species found in Hawaii.

  • These are not Bigfin squid ( magnapianna squid), these are cuttle fish!

  • Unless, of course, bigfin squid, as depicted with the long arms with elbows, arent bigfin squid but something else.

  • Research bigfin squid and you'll see that these are cuttlefish, not bigfin. Nice video though.

  • Aren't those cuttlefish??

  • That's hilarious! I just got back from Kona, and the first thing I see in my recent subscriptions is this video! lol...

Great squid, by the way. :)
