I think one also has to take into account that this is a totally informal performance. Instrumental performers take very different technical approaches to a difficult piece of music depending on whether they are more concerned with reliable intonation vs. musical expression. Niekrug is clearly in the latter camp, and I adore him for it.

This by far is my favorite interpretation of the piece.

starker has way more attack and clarity and his intonation is perfect...i have to take starker on this one- but both are genius players...no doubt about that, whats great is how they are different in their approaches to the same piece!

I would disagree. Neikrug loses a lot of momentum and as a result the overall feeling is almost self-indulgent. Still, there's no denying he's an excellent musician.
Of course, I'm just fourteen and have only been playing two years, so what do I know, right? :D

Neikrug takes more time than Starker...Starker feels a little rushed. They're both brilliant, though. Neikrug taught at BU when I was there. :-)

I think this connection between starker and neikrug doesn't have to exist.
they are so different, you can not compare this two cellist.
starker plays this piece very distant and could, more fast maybe not in the corect character but his tehnic is perfect.
neikrug plays not so perfect tehnically speaking, the intonation it's with lots of problems, maybe because of the age but the character of this playing is much more closer of cassado music. I prefer this interpretation

Neikrug is a legend. I've heard many recordings of this and tempos vary greatly. It's all about personal preference. This is a very, very sensual movement. I think taking time accentuates this. Yes, it's a dance, but a sexy one!
