Joe Venuti was born on a ship on the way to the USA from Italy and became, in many circles, THE great jazz violinist. Eddie Lang (who was also known as Blind Willie Dunn) was a boyhood friend of Venuti, and was the first great jazz guitarist. Lang died in 1933 as the result of a botched tonsillectomy, which operation had been taken at the urging of his friend, Bing Crosby.

  • What are we, a bunch of Jr High School girls bickering over something that doesnt matter?

You cant compare Lang to Django. They played different styles in completely different times.

Why does one have to be "better" than the other?

Its like comparing Steve Howe to Al Dimeola.

    Segovia to Ace Frehley.

lang played guitar like playing a piano, Django ran accurate intense arpeggios all day.

They were both the best in their particular genres and times.

  • This old great is still played in Texas dance halls by various Western Swing bands and usually fills the hardwood! Love Eddie & Joe!

  • @unusualmusician Yes, I agree with you. This time I can be proud of being italian, but I believe that Stuff Smith was the greatest of all. I read he declared during an interview that he listened to some Venuti's records, but he dind't really enjoy.

  • I am so enjoying the work of Venuti. He is so refreshingly NOT Grappelli. Yes, Grappelli was superb...but so was Venuti. Too many not-so-good Grappelli imitators.

I hope you like my own Dinah improv vid response. I also tossed in a recorder solo.

  • Nothing to do: they played better once.

  • Venuti was most definitely a prankster. The things he did were outrageous. He was also fanous for being.......how do you say it discreetly? ......well endowed. Once, when asked what time it was, he whipped it his member wth his wrist watch was on it. Yikes!

  • @edmundusrex

What a tremendous performance by both !!!!!

As you know Venuti was a great prankster. Joe was born in South Philadelphia

in 1903. There is a website with a photo of his birth certificate. I know also because he was my great uncle and his siblings knew the truth and told us.

    Regards-John.

  • Im so glad i was given my grandpa's old jazz records and fell in love with jazz and not KE$HA. It feels good to be a young girl listen to true class and not trash n_nu
