I think it's great when an artist, and Steve is surely an artist, is impressed enough with someone elses work to pay tribute to them before even starting the song. Then to stay fairly committed to performing the song the way it was written is surely a form of flattery. I'm sure Mason Williams would look kindly on this performance and appreciate the man playing as much as the audience did.
